Eligibility Requirements to Study in UK

While eligibility to study in the UK primarily depends on your age and academic qualification, factors such as means of sponsorship, economic stability, language proficiency, are all decisive. Below are your guidelines in brief -

  • Foundation Programs: Higher Secondary School Diploma or any qualification equivalent to a 12th grade.
  • Undergraduate Programs: Completion of All Secondary School Examination or a 12th grade.
  • Postgraduate Programs: Completion of a bachelor’s degree in any field.

While some programs require an upper second-class honours degree, some may accept a lower second-class honours degree in which case require some professional work experience.

You need to demonstrate English language proficiency to be eligible to study in the UK. This can be done through a Secure English Language Test (SELT) like IELTS or TOEFL. Though IELTS is recognised by UK Visas and Immigration, TOEFL is not currently a recognised SELT. However, you may need to check with your university in the UK if they accept TOEFL for visa purposes.

  • A valid passport or equivalent travel documentation.
  • Evidence of funds to sustain your expenses while studying in the UK.
  • Tuberculosis Screening (compulsory for South Asian countries).
  • Confirmation of Acceptance (CAS) provided by your educational institution in the UK as a reference number.
  • You need to convince the UK government that your visa application is genuinely intended to study in the UK and will not be used for any other purposes.

Certain educational programs in the UK need you to take up standardised tests to consider your application. While some of the tests like IELTS are done to assess your English proficiency, some are admission/course specific tests such as GMAT, BMAT, GRE, SAT, MAT, etc.
